I normally check on my plants before I start work in the morning and I do it again in-between meetings. Tuesday was like any normal day for me, but we were scheduled to head out for errands. I remember checking on my plants twice that morning before we went out.
When we got home the first thing I did was take a peek at my plants and was so shocked to see the cucumber plant wilted! It was a super hot day last Tuesday. I immediately went out to check if the stem was broken or if something bit the plant. I picked up the pot and didn't see anything amiss. I did some research on Google and the article I read said that wilting can be caused by heat stress or disease.
The color of the leaves was still green so I hoped that it just got stressed from the heat. I gave it and the other cucumber plant some water. I checked back after an hour and the plant was standing again. Whew! I read too that cucumber needs at least 1 inch of water per week. You can check by sticking your finger an inch down the soil. If it's dry then it needs watering.
The incident gave me such a scare! I've been checking my plants often (like a mother hen looking over her chicks). I need to also repot the cucumbers so they can breathe and drink water better.
Mr. Cucumber on the right just newly recovered. |
