Plantdemic Week 9 Update: Sunflowers, Mustasa, Green Bell Pepper, Tomato and Dill

It's been a month since we updated about our plants. We got tied up with other things, but continue to care for our plants. We've had to contend with zombie aphids and ants the past few weeks. Our vigilance has paid off because we are finally seeing our plants bloom!

The Sunflowers

Streaks of yellow started to show over the last few days. Today one of the sunflowers is opening up more. We are so happy to see the yellow petals grow larger everyday. The two other sunflower plants are still in process of forming the base of the flower. It's been so exciting to watch them grow.

The Tomato

The tomato surprised us early last week with yellow flowers! We hope we were able to pollinate it by hand in time (we haven't seen any bees visiting our balcony). The tomato plant is standing tall and is so far happy sharing the pot with the mustasa plant. We were unfortunately unsuccessful in getting more tomato plants to sprout. We guess the free seeds weren't all that viable.

Mustasa (Mustard Greens)

Mustasa is so far the easiest to grow among all the plants. We have about four healthy plants. We harvested 8 healthy leaves last week and had it for dinner. Check out our mustasa taco (wrap) recipe here. Yum-yum!

Green Bell Pepper

The zombie aphids seem to love the green bell pepper. We've been keeping extra vigilant with the bell pepper plant since it's about 7 inches now. We've just been spraying the aphids with soapy water. We do this every few days to keep the infestation at bay. We're trying to avoid spraying pesticide on it. If things get worse we'll probably try spraying neem oil on it.

Dill

The dill is growing up nicely. It's on a smaller pot that's sitting nicely on the garden chair. We could probably get some for a dish soon.

 Happy gardening!
